A birth and postnatal doula and complete birth geek - from being 14, when I
went to Waterstones to buy a book on birth and the older woman at the counter
was 100% sure I was pregnant and raised her eyebrows. It was totally worth it
though — I read it cover to cover, and have read countless since.
So imagine my shock when I had my first child and left the hospital feeling
like it all went wrong. How did that happen to me? I felt like the most
prepared person in the room.
It turns out, I had more to learn. I did my doula training that year and went
on to have a home birth that completely changed my life — how I feel about
myself, and how I mother. I couldn't believe the difference; I wanted everyone
to feel that way. And it wasn't because I birthed at home — it was because I
was informed, well supported, I made decisions that were right for me, and I
believed in the power of my own body.
